Food Rot, compost bins & R4 collection

Updated October 26, 2026 · Maintained by the site team

Use the R4 work rules to move reachable rot to a composter or accepting storage without letting cleaning replace the delivery.

Reviewed build: 0.1.190.146 FULL FIXED R4 · October 26, 2026. Built against RimWorld 1.6.4871. DLC requirements are listed below.

Set up the system

  1. Install the complete .146 FIXED R4 package and keep only one active mod copy.
  2. Enable Hauling on suitable pawns, including cleaners expected to deliver rot.
  3. Unforbid rot and bins and check allowed areas, access and capacity.
  4. Let the current job finish so a fresh work selection can choose the rot.
  5. If no bin is usable, provide a reachable stockpile or dumping zone whose filter accepts Food Rot.

Current rules and limits

  • R4 still respects Hauling activation. Cleaning-only assignment is not a guarantee of rot delivery.
  • Full accessible bins can be emptied before collection continues. No destination allows ordinary cleaning to continue.
  • Designate regular bones, tiny bones or fresh soup bones with Compost materials if you want them consumed. Unmarked bones remain available for other uses.
  • The native R4 test controls pathfinding and storage boundaries. Live colony pickup and delivery remain to be confirmed.

What R4 changes

R4 addresses rot delivery being displaced by priority cleaning. Rot collection and bin emptying should remain selected through pickup and delivery rather than being replaced by another cleaning pass. The implementation still respects Hauling activation; Cleaning alone does not bypass that requirement.

Current jobs are not cancelled on installation. Let a pawn finish its present task so a fresh work selection can use the changed rules.

Check the destination

  • Rot and the destination must be allowed, reachable and usable by the pawn.
  • An accessible full bin may need to be emptied before another collection.
  • If no composter is usable, provide a stockpile or dumping zone that explicitly accepts Food Rot.
  • Check reservations, carried mixed perishables and allowed areas if a stack remains untouched.
  • If no destination is available, ordinary cleaning can continue; this does not establish that rot delivery succeeded.

Bones and compost yield

Regular bones, tiny bones and fresh soup bones must be explicitly marked with Compost materials before this input path consumes them. Unmarked bones stay available for other uses. Marked bones contribute 0.2 compost units each. Named ancient skulls and excluded trophy items are not ordinary eligible inputs.

A full 100-unit bin yields ten compost bags under the documented rules. Do not treat every skeleton graphic as an eligible bone resource.

Testing status

Native R4 tests reproduce the priority conflict with controlled pathfinding and storage boundaries. Live pickup, carrying and delivery still need confirmation in an actual colony. A cleaner walking near rot is not evidence that the collection completed.
