The original Vulpite has received more than a coat of paint. October's work reaches into gene overlap, family growth, clothing, food policies and the way fox features fit a pawn at different ages. The aim is a distinct colony identity with rules that players can understand and test.

Keep the genome readable

The balance passes remove overlapping effects and retire elongated fingers while retaining a zero-effect compatibility definition for older saves. Several custom genes conflict with equivalent native functional families so the same benefit cannot stack through a second label. Fox fangs becomes an independent transferable gene, with a chance to add a native bite after a damaging melee attack.

The .87 standard-genome pass moves the original Vulpite toward -2 metabolic efficiency, corresponding to 150% genetic hunger before other food-need modifiers. It also changes default passions and tempers overlapping bonuses. Later Scavenger Diet work halves food-poisoning chance while capping combined active-gene protection at 90%. These changes belong to the original line's history; Vulpite V2 has its own separate balance article.

Families need more than a birth roll

The .85 family update caps litters at triplets, with documented odds of 50% single births, 40% twins and 10% triplets. Baby and child aging advances at 1.5 times the normal rate with matching growth-point gain, then the extra aging stops at adulthood. Growth vats keep their existing behavior.

Capable adult fox colonists receive an initial shared-childcare assignment. Later player work and feeding choices remain respected. Litter size is saved through pregnancy and labor, with native parentage, naming and birth outcomes retained. A save/reload test during pregnancy is useful because a family feature must remain consistent beyond the moment a pawn appears.

Hair color, hairstyle and dye are different choices

The newer raven sweep, flowing cascade and envoy braid join the six existing named styles. Their artwork uses natural or dyed hair colors; raven sweep is not permanently locked to black. Natural color can come from a parent's active inherited hair-color gene. Cosmetic dye and a suppressed color do not become inherited genetics, and selecting a hairstyle does not rewrite a pawn's genome.

Multiple passes correct side-facing hair, ear mirroring, helmet fit and newborn proportions. Babies retain the no-adult-hairstyle behavior. Their ear and tail sizes and offsets use age-aware rendering, rather than simply attaching adult features to a smaller body. Apparel work audits 77 wearables and adjusts belts, inventory graphics and drawing nodes; gloves retain their equipment effects without drawing on pawns in the later revision.

Plan the colony around its actual needs

Biotech is required for Vulpite genes and family systems. Alcohol dependency remains part of the design. The newer hunger slider can reduce food drain without removing that dependency, and the separate V2 option offers another starting balance. Test births, growth, inherited colors, drinking and clothing in your own colony: the supplied native and rendering fixtures cover specific paths, not every appearance mod or live family event.
